It May Be Crappy, but It's MY Crappy Movement and I'm Thankful for It

Perhaps it's all the Bikram yoga I've been doing in an attempt to fix my busted knees, or maybe it's just part of the Thanksgiving spirit, but either way, I want to focus today's rant on appreciating your body and your movement.  

All of my MOTW posts are designed to help you move better, safer, and more efficiently. While there is always a restorative goal, there are also always clear undertones of improvement, inadvertently implying what's there right now likely isn't good enough. Today, I wanna flip the script, turn it all around, and talk about being thankful what we currently have. 

Yes, we could all benefit from more mobility work, better posture, or a more ergonomic workstation. But if you're reading this post then you're already taking steps to better yourself and your health, and that is commendable. We spend so much time setting goals and looking to the future that we often miss the here and now. 

The human body is absolutely remarkable it its ability to move. While some of us may be stronger, faster, more agile, more coordinated, or more flexible, each and every one of us should take a moment from time to time and be thankful for the movement we do have, no matter how "good" or "bad." We take our movement for granted so much that its enormity only understood once it is lost. We beat our bodies up day in and day out, sitting for hours at a time, pounding the pavement, or working out in whatever way best suits our need. Today, let's take a moment, even if it's only the time it takes you to read this post, and be thankful for whatever movement it is we do have, as crappy and dysfunctional as it may be. 

When we appreciate what we have, when we are thankful for what we have, when we care about what we have, we want to take care of what we have. In this regard, appreciation and gratitude can really be seen as the foundation of, or first steps on the path to improvement. Today I challenge you to stop living in the future, stop focusing on the bad stuff, and just be thankful for what you have and can do right now. Be grateful for your movement. It's time you thanked your body.
